Sabaneros - Costa Rican Cowboys - Celebrate their day. Law passed 2002 to conmemorate their valuable contribution to the Costa Rican economy and cultural heritage every 2nd Sunday of November.
Costa Rica Sabaneros celebrated
Each year Costa Rica"s "sabaneros" celebrate their day. Sabaneros are Costa Rica"s cowboys - they worked the plains (the "sabanas") of Guanacaste - Costa Rica"s Northwestern province.
Their trademark call - "juipipia!" is heard at all Costa Rican festivals and fiestas. Their clothing - the tall boots (to avoid snakes), their leather belt with the "machete" (the long multi-purpose knife), the "pañuelo" around the neck and the "chonete" (the classic Costa Rican farmer"s hat) evoke a bygone era of raising cattle and taming the plains and "haciendas" of the hot and dry Guanacaste region.
However, more than 60 sabaneros participated in the celebration this Sunday shows that this stalwart member of Costa Rican culture is still alive and well. They come from towns such as Bagaces, Filadelfia Liberia, La Cruz and Cañas.
The activities were sponsored by the Guanacaste Conservation Area, the Liberia Guanacaste local municipality and the private sector.
The celebration includes bull runs and ribbon races (run with horses), local food and drinks.
A perfect place to enjoy the Costa Rica sabanero tradition is at Hacienda Pinilla in Santa Cruz Guanacaste . This premiere gated golf community is set in an enormous ranch and offers a Costa Rica spectacle with a Tico rodeo, local dances and garb.
