Guanacaste

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's Northwestern province. It is mainly considered a beach destination, with flatlands and Nicaragua lies beyond it's Northern border. A new airport - Liberia International Airport - serves the area - making it very practical to visit by shortening driving times from San Jose, the capital city.

The Guanacaste province is considered 'cowboy' country because of a history of cattle ranching and one can go to many regional fairs where food and seeing Costa Rican-style bull-riding can be enjoyed. 

The area is quite laid-back and many beautiful beaches can be found where it meets up with the Pacific Coast. Although Guanacaste is considered relatively flat it does have slight mountains where it meets up with the Pacific and this produces beautiful ocean-view areas all along the coast. 

A lot of construction has taken place this coast because of the great beauty of the area. One can find simple cabañas to 6-star luxury hotels such as the 4 Seasons. Favorite activities include surfing with great waves all along the coast, water sports, diving, sailing, fishing or just laying out in the sun. One-day tours to volcanoes and thermal spas are available as well as rafting and other adventures nearby - so Guanacaste makes a perfect nature adventure destination. 

Nosara is a low-key high-end enclave next to Punta Guiones beach in Guanacaste. Here you can find great food and lodging options including the Harmony Nosara Hotel
